Re: York open day

Our secretary will shortly be emailing out full details of our Open Day to all neighbouring branch secretaries and to all members of York branch. We will be complying our best with common-sense covid precautions. Those of you who have visited our garden before will hopefully be impressed by further ...

Re: Cultivation advice for Agave sisalana and desmettiana Solved

Two years ago from a nursery in Cornwall I bought a variegated Agave desmettiana in a 20cm plastic pot. I think it had been kept outside along with their other 'hardy exotics'. Like my other agaves, it has been outside over summer and in a warm greenhouse over winter. Last week I decided to repot it...

Re: Scrap plants

I have a 'scrap' huge epiphyllum which I left outside completely unprotected since last Summer hoping it would die over winter. To be honest I couldn't face carrying it back under cover. The damn thing is still alive and is now covered with flowers. I'll have to hope next winter is a lot colder!

Re: Perfect polyphylla potting mix

9152115A-6068-4D5F-8334-9C2DA33DCA66_1_201_a.jpeg This is my Aloe polyphylla. It's been completely unprotected outside in York for the last 3 years. It has a free root run into garden soil with added grit. Quite a few of the brittle roots snapped off when I planted it, but it seemed not to care. Yo...

Re: Question about the 2020 National Show

What percentage of the total population between 70-79 are they expecting to get the virus? Close to 100% will get it eventually, but it's a question of when. If you are a hermit in a Welsh cave you might avoid it altogether but you are unlikely to be a very successful cactus enthusiast in that case....

Re: Question about the 2020 National Show

The current estimate for death rates in 70-79 y olds getting the Covid19 is 8%. I guess the average age of people showing cacti is over 70. So there are two scenarios for how things will look in July 2020: 1. The population has pretty much much been fully saturated by exposure to Covid 19 and 8% or ...

Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2019

Started today but still open Saturday and Sunday 14-15th Sept. Weather is looking great for an enjoyable weekend. If you are coming, please come and say hello to York branch team in the specialist societies marquee. I would have included more photos if I hadn't torn out all my hair uploading and del...

Re: Echeveria Agavoides

This was a single head 20 years ago. I lost the original label which I think was Echeveria agavoides f. minima. I've never seen the plant for sale since. Mine has never flowered. Now in a 40cm bowl. Unfortunately it never gets away from the uniform lacklustre green colour and prefers to scorch than ...

Re: Echeveria Agavoides

Yes Tina, that's the one. The smaller head was much smaller in 2016. The larger head has grown a bit but I guess it has nearly reached its maximum size. I'll repot it for next year I think to try and squeeze a bit more growth from it. I think it's intriguing that this one formed one basal offset but...
