Re: Top dressing for succulents

I have quite a collection of Tylecodons, and other winter growing succulents and bulbs (good show of Lachenalia flowers right now). The leaves lose plenty via transpiration anyway, even with top dressing. As for what I use - I get the smallest granite grit that my local quarry does. (It's actually ...

Re: Cultivation snippets wanted for CactusWorld

Cacti grow from the south of South America to the north of North America, in every country of the continent. They grow at sea level and high in the mountains. There is no “one size fits all” in cactus culture. Please correct me if t here’s a country where they don’t grow...... [/quote Any cacti in ...

Re: Cultivation snippets wanted for CactusWorld

Cover the fresh wound of a cactus cutting with a thick layer of ashes until it is dry. It will keep molds at bay. Thanks for this tip. I presume you mean wood ash? I prefer cigarette or cigar ash as it is finer. Being a non-smoker I make do with wood ash. Ash consists of the salts that remain after...

Re: IKEA Vaxer grow lights

I have an Ikea Växer and think it works really well. I had an etiolated argan tree seedling that I cut down to the non-etiolated stem. Under the Växer it has developed nice shiny dark green leaves on a short stem. So it seems to be doing a good thing.

Re: Germination begins

The seed distribution is, AFAIK, run by volunteers raising some money for the BCSS. It is not a slick commercial service. IMHO they deserve some credit and patience.
I have sold seeds myself and it is a lot of work for a few pennies.

Re: Germination begins

My first BCSS seeds are coming up, less than a week after they were sown. Not what I would have expected, Stomatium pyrodorum. It might turn out to have been a mistake to sow these now, I suspect they're going to etiolate. Hopefully they won't get too far before the sun god returns. Why not use a g...
