Re: Pesticide ban?

Hi, I've found that since Malathion was banned some time ago, a product called 'Provardo' is effective against mealy bug. Rotating your chems is good practice in order to lessen pest resistance. I won't use any chemicals outside of the glasshouse. The recent German study of insect population I.e. 75...

Re: Bradleya 35 (2017)

To discover a new species is fantastic. To discover a new genus is incredible. I have mixed feelings about it. This is obviously not a prolific or widespread species. I fear that it is destined for the "prized" collections of the wealthy posers who care nowt for this gem. I pray that the l...

Re: Cactus collection 2016

I had a lovely Turbinicarpus collection (and asclepiadaceae ) that I had to give away when I went to uni. If you have any seedlings or a nursery where I can get some I'd be way grateful.
Love the shots.

Re: Look what I found under the staging

Yes, good luck getting rid. I'm so pleased that I've not had mealy for years. I think I avoided them by utterly scrutinizing any new plant to my collection. I had years of trying to kill with malathion- which I suspect killed more of my Notocacti than the woolly bastards. Garden centres are a massiv...

Re: Death from old age; longevity

I had to leave my collection with my mum with strict caveats as to who she could distribute my remaining plants, as I left home (glasshouse) and place I slept, when I went to study at Askham Bryan Hort' College in Yorkshire. I left behind an Echinocereus grandis that I'd grown from tiny and longed t...

Watering

Hi xerophytophiles, I'd welcome advice as to whether E. obesa or Stapelia specs may suffer if watered now, in an un-heated glasshouse. I've always stopped water from around nov' and watered again come warmish march. Plants are fine but very slow, as you might expect, to 'get going'. But flower well....

Re: Help; can I save my T. spachianus?

Hi, thanks for all your advice. I'm thinking that the idea of a re-pot in spring and submerging the affected area is the way. It isn't rot, so will use perlite/loam around collar. Is there a method to produce rooting from the area newly submerged? Cutting a 5mm 'gob' cut, or wedge around the circumf...

Re: Haworthia help

I've got a clump of H. truncata which I've found tricky to over expose to strong sun but then needing to dry out quickly. I grow it in 80% perlite in a large pot. Try to only water with rain water, esp if in clay pots or the salts increase and get drawn to the pot edge. I don't water from Sept to Ma...

A curious flavirostris

I've tried to send a photo of a Stapelia flavirostris with 6 lobes (petals?). I wanted to know if anyone else has seen this. It's obviously to a small degree faciation. It gave me a smile. It's covered in bluebottle eggs and maggots (they don't live long). I've tried to explain why I love this genus...

Help; can I save my T. spachianus?

Hello,
Can anyone advise me on the condition that has worsened on my Trichocereus over two seasons. I at first just thought it was 'corking' as occurs with cerei with age, but this isn't that.
Much appreciated,
Steve
