Re: Sowing cactus seeds: best time?

And is that the cause of confusion? Different experts with different experience growing different species with different needs .... and the rest of us working in the dark. This is always a problem whatever you cultivate. You can look into it scientifically, but expect a lot of jargon, detail and co...

Re: Blossfeldia seedlings in habitat

Re: Please can I see photos of your DIY staging?

If wood it would make it much easier to make wood staging as you could attach it direct to the frame.

A bit more tricky to do that if it's aluminium.

Seed preparation

Next year I'm going to try and grow cactus from my own seed for the first time. At the moment the seeds are in numerous berries on various plants, notably Mammillaria. Is there a methodical way of harvesting and preparing seeds? I'm concerned that the pulp will make a congealed mess around the seeds...

Re: Advice on Astrophytum caput-medusae please

I grow in a mineral mix and also in light shade, with no problems. Strong light and heat will dry it out.

Re: Advice please: disease or corking?

Mike's right in that most mites tend to feed on the new, tender growth at the meristem. But this does look like mite damage, even though it's near the base. Despite that, you can't rule out mites, so I would follow the above advice ie quarantine and treat as if it were mites. Throw the soil and pot ...
