Quick question - is your greenhouse aluminium or wood?

If wood it would make it much easier to make wood staging as you could attach it direct to the frame.

A bit more tricky to do that if it's aluminium.

Seed preparation

Next year I'm going to try and grow cactus from my own seed for the first time. At the moment the seeds are in numerous berries on various plants, notably Mammillaria. Is there a methodical way of harvesting and preparing seeds? I'm concerned that the pulp will make a congealed mess around the seeds...

I grow in a mineral mix and also in light shade, with no problems. Strong light and heat will dry it out.

Mike's right in that most mites tend to feed on the new, tender growth at the meristem. But this does look like mite damage, even though it's near the base. Despite that, you can't rule out mites, so I would follow the above advice ie quarantine and treat as if it were mites. Throw the soil and pot ...

I'd look for a humidity reading too

Cold and dry is ok; it's cold & wet that causes rot, so you need to keep an eye on the humidity; perhaps consider getting a dehumidifier for that room

What an honour! The first time I've won anything since the egg & spoon race at our local fete when I was a youngster, round about the time I acquired that Copiapoa :grin:
