Re: Growing dioscorea elephantipes from seed

I have only done these twice, so I am no expert. I used the bag method once and not the other time. My germ mix was pretty much the same as my growing mix, nothing special. put the seeds in shallow holes, and covered with the mix. They both took quite a while to germinate 2-3 months, and I cant tell...

Re: Top dressing for succulents

Hi David and others, I was taught back in the day to use sharp river sand in my canning mix (not necessarily cactus mixes) for better drainage. I grow lots of veggies in LECA with an ebb and flood aquaponic systems and have tried another "brand" that was full of various sizes and shapes. The plants ...

Re: Polycarbonate glazing and winter growers

Polycarbonate comes in several configurations, corrugated and multi-walled (2 and 3 layers) as well as clear and diffuse. The more layers the more light gets reflected back of sideways. Corrugated has 20% more surface area than the layered forms, resulting in greater surface area = greater heat loss...

Ipomoea platensis

Hi All, I sowed 5 seeds (CSSA seeds) in May of 18, one germinated. It produced 2 cotyledons upon germination. It sat like that for months, finally I had the nerve to have a look and it was generating a large caudex. But now, its losing its cotyledons, one at a time, and there is no sign of growth, t...

Re: IKEA Vaxer grow lights

I am not sure there is a layman's explanation for this but I will give it a try. Most light meters measure high in the wavelengths most perceptible by the human eye, green. Foot candles for example or lux. Unlike LED lights, most other light sources have some energy in all spectrums so they show up ...

Cyphostemma juttae - no roots

Hello, just saved this old plant from a lost garden collection, it had been overwatered and underwatered for years. Not sure how moist the media should be or how dry to get some rooting going, its winter, not really cold but cold enough that I don't think it will put on much root growth now until sp...

Re: Winter, young plants from one greenhouse to another

thank you for the insight to the cold issues of that Pachypodium , I have always liked them and seem to be drawn towards hard to grow plants. I will keep it at work for the time being, My Lithop seedlings are still in community pots which has made watering difficult because they are growing at diffe...

Winter, young plants from one greenhouse to another

I have the luxury of starting my seeds in a beautiful greenhouse and I am wondering if my seedlings are going to go dormant, because I want to get them into a regular cycle of growth and rest and into my unheated new greenhouse. One particular plant, Pachypodium horombense was sown in February last ...
