Re: Fockea time

Fockea capensis flower 885B5644-8450-403D-88D0-2573FBFD12B8.jpeg I have two older plants of Fockea edulis, and last year one developed a fruit. This year I looked carefully at the flowers of both plants and they looked identical. Since they are reported to be dioecious I assumed I have a male and f...

Re: Right time to repot some cacti?

Thanks Patrick for taking the time to respond.

We have had some high temperatures the last week but I think they are over. The days are getting much shorter now but ya never know.

I will get started later this weekend and into next week.

Right time to repot some cacti?

I am looking at transplanting some cacti this week and could not find any reason not to do so now. I am located along the coast 50 miles south of San Francisco. We are now in the early stage of our "Indian" summer with very high day temperatures (for us anyway) and cool nights. I tried to ...

Re: Bulbs: where to begin?

I would like to try growing bulbs, and would like some advise. 1. What bulbs are most suitable for indoors, i.e. bulbs on the smaller end of the spectrum, and the ones that do not grow very tall, since in the winter they would grow in enclosed space? My first though is South African bulbs, but I am...

Conophytums waking up

I visited a small (but packed) commercial C&S nursery last Sunday and was amazed at her beautiful Conophytums, almost all having shed their dry sheath and some in bloom. Mine on the other hand are mostly still encased and could dead for all I know. Our "Indian Summer" is just getting s...

Re: Potential new greenhouse

My two cents.. You will fill up any space you have. I prefer to be able to bend over to get to things low and to be able to turn around without knocking over a plant. I also like to show off the plants sometimes and getting two people in 25" is difficult. My tactic is to be ruthless with what I...

Re: Solar Powered Fans

Can you not just use a mains-powered fan? Or use a transformer to power your PC fans? Solar seems a bit complicated and expensive. I got the solar panels so that I wasn't using any electricity in the GH (only the heater in winter) - the original SPs must have paid for themselves by now. Did a singl...

Re: Solar Powered Fans

I am also doing the same thing, and have tried a few fans. I tried a 9" automotive 12V fan with a decent CFM but was really, really loud. I dont think you need much of a battery, it only needs to go on when the sun is up and pounding on the roof. However, during our sunny cool days of winter an...

Re: Water adjustments...

Our ground water has a pH range seasonally of 7.5 to 8.3 and an EC of 1.1 to 1.4. (My desired EC for my C&S plants is 0.5 to 0.75 so if I don't get rid of the bicarbonate I have no room for adding fertilizers) Consulting for a large berry grower years ago I discovered that the high tech fertigat...
