Thank you all for your comments. I will also bear the paper over the holes in mind. Thank you kohinoor for the YouTube video link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ego2FkuQwxc I also found the article below from a Master Gardener in the USA. "Plants like good drainage, especially those in conta...

Re: Stones, pebbles, cracked terra at the bottom of pots worsens the drainage. Solved

Terry, thanks for the advice.

I currently use a plastic mesh at the bottom of the pot which stops soil coming through and enables free drainage. ( I just bought 5 x A4 sheets of plastic mesh for £3.50 on Ebay. Much less expensive than others on offer as it comes from China.)

Stones, pebbles, cracked terra at the bottom of pots worsens the drainage. Solved

Hello I read that putting stones, pebbles, cracked pots, etc, in the bottom of a container actually worsens the drainage, rather than aids it. Two universities in the USA have also suggested that putting stones or cracked terra pots at the bottom of containers does actually worsen the drainage as it...

Re: Own soil mix for Cacti and Succulents

Thanks to everyone for their advice/suggestions.

I will now start re-potting and will also do a couple of tests and see how things work out this year.

Re: Own soil mix for Cacti and Succulents

A 2:1 mixture of Clover John Innes No. 3 and coarse grit that I have bought under the Bowers, Silvaperl and Westland labels. This grit is an average of about 4mm particle size. Seedlings can be grown using a finer grit of about 1mm particle size. For winter-growers and trickier plants, I up the gri...

Own soil mix for Cacti and Succulents

I am in the process of making my own soil mix as I have found the 'Cati & Succulent mix' purchased from Garden Centres to be a lot less gritty than I would like. I have seen on YouTube various videos where Builder's sand or Horticultural sand is recommended to be part of the mix. In the latest BCCS ...

Although I have some years experience in Bonsai, Cacti and Succulents are new to me and am now learning quickly. I received an excellent membership...

Two New Cacti To Identify.

Hello

My two new Cacti arrived today. One between 5 and 8 years, the other around 10 years old.

Could you please help identify them? The smaller one has slightly larger tougher spines than the other.

Many thanks
