Re: Aloe polyphylla

I've seen only a few photos of variegated ones! Haven't fed much, but it's been re-potted a few times, and last time I mixed in some feed granules. That was last year, did feed it once this year with some liquid feed. My strategy so far has been mainly to pot them up early and in bigger pots than yo...

Re: Aloe polyphylla

Coming back from being away for two weeks I'm always a bit anxious to see how the plants have gotten on. Much to my surprise I found this! https://s9.gifyu.com/images/SaY9j.md.jpg https://s9.gifyu.com/images/SaY90.md.jpg First time I have one of my own seed grown polyphyllas flowering! This plant is...

Re: Wi-Fi Thermometer

I previously used some wifi enabled ones (there: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0B99Q69JZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ), but have switched to the same switchbot one. So far for me: -More reliable connection -No issues with humidity yet (the wifi ones suffered, and one ...

Re: Agave talk & pictures

Do you keep the bed dry during the winter @Herts Mike? I was visiting my mother over the holidays and checked on an A. americana which she has on her balcony for most of the year. It was swimming! Must have been swimming for the better part of the last few months with all the rain. Hasn't really bee...

Re: Baobab seed pre treatment

If they have leaves I give a little water, if they've dropped all their leaves they don't get water until I see buds developing, usually somewhere in april or may.

Re: Baobab seed pre treatment

I've sown them a few times, and have a Madagascan baobab and several A. digitata. Best germination I got when I sanded down the hard outer layer until I got through the hard shell, then an overnight soak I believe. They are quite variable in dropping leaves, last winter I had one which kept some lea...

Re: Watering A. polyphylla in winter

I did let my youngish plants dry out by mistake this autumn and they shrivelled alarmingly but recovered well within a few days of watering. I won't be doing it again. Yeah, when they're growing they'll definitely show it when they are water stresses. Leaves go straight up, but they can recover qui...

Watering A. polyphylla in winter

I've brought all my A. polyphylla into the frost-free greenhouse. Many people say these don't like dry roots, and enjoy a good watering. Last winter I barely watered my polyphylla's when in the greenhouse, and they actually came through looking really well. I gave them maybe a little splash of water...
