Collectors reference VIL

Does anyone know who VIL is / was. I have a Mammillaria from the Dominican Republic with a VIL 6 reference, and a friend has a plant of the same species, M. prolifera with just VIL and stated to be from Haiti.

Re: Baobab seed pre treatment

My son germinated 4 out of 6. After reading a whole variety of claims, he simpy sanded down one side of each seed and then soaked them for 24 hrs before sowing in damp compost.

Re: Mammillaria SB1659

I've never grown SB1659, but I've donme some deskbound investigation. The first thing was to locate Puerto El Porteluezo, on which I failed. But dropping the Puerto lead me to a location more or less in the middle of the width of BCN, and about level with Puerto Lobos on the Sonoran mainland. The im...

Re: Question .... Echinocereus pensilis morangaya cultivation

I have one that has been shoved ot the back of the bench for years. I must elevate it in a hanging basket, and hope the extra light brings it into flower. Not the prettiest of Echinocerei, but as I grew this one from seed from Mesa Garden, MG 985.571, sown in 1996, I don't want to consign it to the ...

Re: Moving home / greenhouse

I moved house nearly 7 years ago, and had about 1800 plants to move. Not many were tall plants, so I bought 80 stacking crates and over the few months between agreeing to buy and completion, I gradually filled the crates. I took out all the tall ones and moved them to my daughter's garage, a journey...

The Seed Pool - CLOSED

I have looked after the Seed Pool for many years, and have always kept the seed in a spare fridge, located for most of its time in my garage. However I have to report that the fridge has come to the end of its life. We do have fridge in the kitchen, but there is no home for the boxes of seed there, ...

Re: RHS and gov't co-founded research on peat-free growing media

I certainly missed it. Thanks for posting. My first question is whether people have used SylvaGrow products as the base for their cactus mixes. Looking at the desription, their John Innes inludes composed bark, so am concerned abput particle size, son;t want to be seiving every bag!

Re: Mammillaria ID...

Yes, Mammillaria painteri but fma monstruosa, sometimes called cv. Caterpincy. The actual species is rather rare in cultivation, and offsets as uual from around teh base, and has many more spines. It can be found under Reppenhagen's number 1396. The German Mamm society offered seed a year or so ago,...

Re: Not a mammilaria ?,

I can't see any evidence that there is a separate axil at the base of the tubercle on the plant in the middle, though the clarity of the photo coud be better. Maybe my eyes are not good enough, always possible!
