Re: CactusWorld (Dec 2023) Copiapoa

When I read the description of C. saxifraga, I was not sure whether it was the same locality as Ritter's C. calderana var. spinosior. But Roger's comment about the Thelocephalas made me unsure. I know of no better place to find T. krausii than there. But there are several interesting localities for ...

Re: Copiapoa coquimbana var. pendulina

Yes, the range of variation in C. coquimbana forms is quite large. I do not find it easy to identify Copiapoa plants without a label and without concrete information about their origin.
But one thing is pretty certain - they will flower yellow and are all beautiful.

Re: Copiapoa coquimbana var. pendulina

Your plant looks unusual for the taxon (spines and epidermis colour). Here is a typical plant south of Fray Jorge NP that we visited last year.

OK! Neither P. araucanus nor P. neuquensis - looks very much like P. valentinii.

Re: Pterocactus spec.nova

Hello, Chris, a picture of your plant would help to solve the problem. We have been around Bajada del Agrio several times and all Pterocacti that we found there were either P. valentinii or P. fischeri. We have never seen P. neuquensis or P. tuberosus in that area. The most northern distribution of ...

Re: Setiechinopsis mirabilis ..... and quite a few questions

Hello, perhaps this story that Roberto Kiesling told us explains the questions around Setiechinopsis mirabilis: The plants usually grow in slightly saline soil. When it rains heavily, the salt is washed into the lower layers, the seeds germinate and the plants grow, flower and produce vast quantitie...

Re: BCSS ZOOM Talks

Hi, we very much appreciate that the BCSS is still keeping up the Zoom meetings! There have been many wonderful presentations. One of them stayed in our mind because it was the only one that was interactive - the topic was about judging plants at the shows. This interactivity function might as well ...

Re: Pterocactus - Jewels of the Cono Sur [download]

They would certainly be happier - especially if the potted walls are not exposed to direct sunlight. Pterocacti love light but appreciate a cool position for their roots. We have in the past lost plants because the roots got too hot.
