Re: First time in Flower

My father originally grew this Oreocerus from seed, over 50 years ago, and it has flowered for the first time! It's about 1m tall. Ralph, which sp. is this? I've got O. pseudofossulatus as tall as I am and I'm ever hopeful that it'll flower one day  It's growth rate has been relatively much f...

Well Ed, for me these are all just agaves albeit distinctive groups but certainly not distinct genera.

Re: RHS Plants of the year

Also guys, when using the formal Latin generic name, this should be x Semponium since these are the intergeneric cross Sempervivum x Aeonium . I'm starting to think that these crosses are a waste of time. They don't look to be an improvement on Aeonium and if you want hardiness stick with th...

Re: RHS Plants of the year

I saw some semponiums for sale in early January this year. The garden centre reckoned they could cope with -4C snip1.JPG But I thought that at the price they were asking, snip2.JPG they were a bit too expensive. snip3.JPG Phil, that's good evidence to support my supposition that semponiums generall...

Re: RHS Plants of the year

I was also impressed by the × Semponiums exhibited by Surreal Succulents, first named in our CactusWorld journal in March 2020. They do appear a nice combination of the large leaf rosettes of Aeonium with the more compact inflorescences of Sempervivums and hopefully will not get too tall quickly. S...

Re: RHS Plants of the year

Isn't it a mangave ? Depending on which paper you follow it might be an Agave as Manfreda was lumped under Agave in one study. I prefer the idea that splits Manfreda, Polianthes back out and created Echinoagave, Paleoagave and Paraagave. Here's some 'interesting' suggestions for the new hybrid gene...

problem cactus

Hi, A member of our local gardening club has a problem with a cactus. It looks like a fungal infection to me but I'm not entirely sure. She says that she thinks it came quickly and suddenly last summer and has not affected the older part of the plant. Temperature in the conservatory never goes below...

Re: Confusion and contradiction.

I see no reason why a photo of Haemanthus albiflos should be excluded from a BCSS photo competition unless part of a show judged using the BCSS Handbook of Shows . BTW, I thought the pot would cause controversy rather than the plant. Also Ernie, the plant you included has the correct name of H. pauc...

Re: Confusion and contradiction.

Ernie, sorry if I've apparently caused you confusion. My authority for what is considered to be succulent is The Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants , 2nd ed., 2020, which I referenced in the latest CW article on Haemanthus albiflos . There, as I said, four species of Haemanthus , out of the cu...
