With experience it's sometimes easy to recognise recently imported wild Conophytums, e.g. epidermal scarring and years of old sheaths. But it's also often difficult to impossible to be sure when they've had a year or more in cultivation to acclimatise and/or been broken up to root cuttings. With the...

Such a small plant may well be dead......try to carefully remove the old dry sheath to see what's inside. We've had a few discussions on Facebook groups where growers have lost conos during this last hot summer.

It's the start of the growing season in the Northern hemisphere Peter. But the plants should be dry sheathed before watering and not all species will be ready at the same time. Most of mine in the UK already had water but others won't be ready for a couple of weeks yet as the old leaves are not full...
