Re: Pinguiculas

Do you have a picture Eric? Temperate and Mexicans would have different requirements. I grew most of my Mexicans in mostly inorganic mix for many years. In my experience they remained fairly small in that mix. I'm now using a mix based on peat and JI2 in which some are growing much bigger presumably...

Re: Cactus blemishes

My first thought was oedema. Scale can be scraped off fairly easily. It may leave a mark but not cause a lot of damage. Trying to scrape off oedema or scars from any other reason will not be easy and will cause significant damage. Thanks Iann I've tried scraping again and it's not budging, I feel I...

Re: Cactus blemishes

If the raised bumps have a darker dot in the middle it's scale, you may just have several generations expanding their empire. Systemic is required so they get poisoned. On another Rebutia the bumps did indeed look as though they might have a darker dot in the middle. So maybe there are several gene...

Re: Cactus blemishes

Thank you for the replies. I had discounted scale because I've had examples of them before, so I knew what they look like, but I'll definitely have another look and try SB Invigorator anyway as I have some somewhere. Ali's thrips theory sounds interesting although I have rarely seen any in my greenh...

Cactus blemishes

I have these blemishes on some Rebutias and a Tephrocactus. They're raised, hard and don't scratch off easily. Could anybody suggest a cause and whether they might be contagious. Any suggestions for treatment would be appreciated but they look permanent to me. They don't appear to be scale and I don...

I have a small selection of tile drill bits which also work quite well for this purpose, drill slowly and use some kind of tape where the hole is going to be to stop the bit sliding about to begin with, as el48tel says.

Re: Sinningia leuchotrica

A reduction in leaf size each year may also be a consequence of reduced nutrients, Purzo. Do you repot frequently? I renew the compost every year, in late winter/early Spring, before restarting watering. Thanks for the suggestion Mal, I have to admit I don't repot regularly although I do feed with ...

Re: Sinningia leuchotrica

hi Eric
I've had one of these in the greenhouse, it keeps some leaves through the winter and I do give it a bit of water every now and then. I've noticed that leaf sizes seems to have reduced year on year. What compost are you using, mine is quite gritty?
