Re: Outside Opuntia Flower
I also grow carnivorous plants which absolutely NEED soft water, preferably rain water. So as I ran a bit short with last years long dry summer I upgraded to a bigger water butt.
I haven't had to use any of the water in it this year

Re: Aylostera question
Definitely not a lobivia, way too small and if I remember rightly, the parent plant had flower remains and fruits that were consistent with aylostera type species. No idea what colour they had been though. That was probably why I was given a piece as I was looking and going "that looks differen...

Re: Aylostera question
Here is the plant in question, the black tips are more prominent in life, especially on the new growth. Sadly no flowers as yet.

Aylostera question
I have a small plant that bears the name Aylostera nigrispina. I don't remember where I got it, I have a feeling it was a gifted cutting, possibly from derek bowdery a few years ago. It has not flowered as yet, has quite long spines for an aylostera with black tips. I will try to get a picture soon ...

Re: puna clavaroides
That plant is stunning, I especially like the fact that the growth all looks regular and no misshapen joints. I haven't found any of my pterocactus to scorch but they certainly drop joints with no encouragment. They root where ever they fall, whilst doing some repotting yesterday I found one squeeze...

I don't feel that root mealies are getting enough hate with the poll. At least with normal mealies you can see the blighters and attack them directly. Despite a rigorous repotting and deinfesting last year. I am still finding some as I am starting to repot some this spring.

Re: Own soil mix for Cacti and Succulents
Just to add to the peat/sand mentioned above, that is the mix I grow my venus flytraps in and they love it being bog plants
My cactus/succulent mix is similar to most peoples, JI mixed with cat litter.
