Re: Agave talk & pictures

Something to consider with havardiana is that it doesn’t tolerate wet winter conditions anywhere near as well as ovatifolia. They are very cold tolerant, but where they grow in Texas/Coahuila (also Chihuahua if I remember right) is much drier than the Sierra Lampazos where ovatifolia occurs.

Re: Agave talk & pictures

I managed to pick up an Agave ovatifolia from a garden centre in November last year that was left over from the season. It had a fair bit of damage from leaf/root rot from being overwatered/left in very rich compost for too long. This seems to be an unfortunate pattern at a lot of places that don’t ...

The nova looks great, wish there had been more left at Wisley when I was there.

Re: Agave talk & pictures

Looking really nice and healthy! Thank you! 🙂 A few more of my favourites at the moment: Agave shrevei ssp. matapensis has really come good this year. The combination between the blue grey on the leaves and the red on the spines make it very eye catching. 33876213-6531-4604-B8C3-1B63F8C198C3.jpeg 4...

Re: Agave talk & pictures

My Agave montana group has responded well to all the rain this summer. They struggled with the heatwave last year even with water 2 times every week but look much healthier now. This has to be one of my favourite Agave species. They cope well with our climate better than a lot of Agaves and there is...

Cactus ID help please

Hi all, I currently have a few cacti that are without labels and was wondering if anyone could give me any help with identifying them. Thank you in advance. Re: Agave ovatifolia

Unfortunately by the time a spike has emerged it’s too late as the plant will have effectively killed itself by consuming all of the stored energy it has produced throughout its lifetime. There is some discussion about how damage to the growing tip of a spike can cause bulbil production on species t...
