Re: Over-summering seedlings

Ah but I am the father/father-in-law, and would I trust my offsping and spouse? No way, they both have killer, not green, fingers! Likewise local friends, who can kill a hedge.

Over-summering seedlings

Thought I might pass my experience of trying to keep seedling alive over the summer on to anyone in a similar situation. I tried growing some cactii from seed, sowing in March/April. Unfortunately I was going to be away for 6 weeks in the middle of the summer, so how to keep the seedlings alive? I b...

Sowing Lithops

I thought I'd have a try at some Lithops for a change, rather than things like Rebutia and Lobivia. Any hints on a good way to sow and grow these?

Incidentally, any views on the ideas of sowing in Sept/Oct as some people I've talked to do?

Is this normal?

I've been growing some rebutia from seed, and looking at the seedlings the other day I saw what looked like offshoots from the bodies of two of them: [attachment 5424 shoots.jpg] The first is rebutia senilis v cana, the second is rebutia huasiensis. Both were sown in March. There is only one like th...

Is this an aloe?

In southern Turkey there are some succulents in the local pine forest, and some of the same in our apartment. They look like some sort of Aloe to me, but I could be wrong. The nice thing is that they survive, whether they get watered or not. Any idea what they are? [attachment 4661 plant.jpg] Tony :...

Re: Seedlings over the summer

Thanks for that. Our friends and neighbours are sudden death to anything that grows, so I'll probably go for the bag or capillary mat approach. At the branch meeting last night, it was suggested that they stay in a propagator (which I can seal as tightly as a bag), and put on a windowsill which only...

Seedlings over the summer

I've got a whole load of cactus seedlings (mainly rebutia and lobivia), my first. It turns out that I'll be away for 6 weeks this summer (late July on). Any suggestions about what I do with these while I'm away? Currently they are in 2.5" pots in an unheated propagator which seals up fairly tig...

A nice welcome home

I've just come back from a two week break, and this is what I found! A Rebutia Krainziana (spelling?) which I bought at Croston Cactus over Easter. Lots of buds still on it too.

Re: Croston Cactus at Easter

Knew I'd read it somewhere! Thanks. Actually, John mentioned it at a meeting a couple of months ago, but I thought I'd try to make sure.

Sounds like you've been having fun (not). You need a day out after all that.
