Re: Derek Bowdery

A very sad loss indeed. Lets hope his collection is preserved - its amazing how many people know the Carnegia and the Invicta.

Re: Winter losses or damage

I just lost a large Mamm Linsayi (6" across x 3" tall). I first noticed a depression a couple of weeks ago at one point on last years flower ring and then grey mould on an unripened fruit. When I turned the plant out the compost was bone dry (so no drips from above) but the plant was soft and 100% d...

Re: Plastic Pots

Tina (or for anyone else who needs to know)

You can get full details of the pot sizes and depth from downloading their brochure (page 65) - though they're very helpful on the phone. You'll also notice that they do everything else garden related as well - eg labels at very reasonable prices.

Re: Plastic Pots

Try this link for plastic display bowls, they are based in Colne, Lancashire. I bought a load last year and I believe they are exactly the same as the ones that were at the national + they are excellent value for money:

Re: pot cleaning

I find sterilising this way essential for seed raising - I use the microwaveable pasta sauce tubs with the re-sealable lids (as found in all supermarkets) and this allows the tubs to remain sealed after sowing for weeks/months without any algae or mould growing. Other growers use boiling water - may...

Re: pot cleaning

Same here + I have always kept an old microwave in the greenhouse which I use for sterilising all soil mix.

Re: Did you enjoy the national show

It matters not whether people go primarily for the exhibits, the sales or for the whole event, the point is that the National show has something for everyone and as the premier event of our hobby it deserves to be held more often. However, I sense there is a mood to try and find reasons against rath...

Re: Did you enjoy the national show

It has been noted that: " The convention is now every 4 years and two years apart from the National so we would not want to clash with that" So why not make the convention every 3 years as well? - that way you could still retain a two year gap for the event that was the most difficult to organise (e...
