Re: BCSS Seed List December 2021
In the UK, 10% of the population live in digital poverty, with no access to online services including forums and online purchasing sites and online banking. For them, often their only methods of purchase are paper catalogues and cheques other than face-to-face shopping. Just because we are fortunat...

Re: Illegal Cacti and the BCSS
I try not to interfere with free speech but I will comment on the above. I should hope not, indeed. I don't see why you even have to make that comment. Nevertheless your input is welcome. Just so this is perfectly clear the IUCN is International Union for Conservation of Nature and I have been work...

Re: Illegal Cacti and the BCSS
To me it is just mental acrobatics to accept that any species discovered in Mexico before 1997 is perfectly OK to NEED to grow, and any species discovered in any other country right up to today is perfectly OK to NEED to grow, but if you NEED to grow a Mexican species discovered after 1997 it shows...

Re: Illegal Cacti and the BCSS
But how is this different from any other plant that is considered to be legal? I agree. We do not "need" to grow any exotic plant. However, human nature being what it is, we must accept that many have had pleasure for many decades in cultivating interesting and beautiful non-native plants...

Re: Illegal Cacti and the BCSS
I know that this is not the first time, nor the last, that this discussion comes up. I know you've been active in some of these discussions, ragamala, and I respect your thoughts on the matter. I know you're an environmentalist and know a lot about the subject. My understanding that the law passed ...

Re: Illegal Cacti and the BCSS
I have read the posts here with some raising of eyebrows, and feel obliged to support Pattock, who has never gone unreasonably beyond the position he set out in the OP. Karl R has not represented his knowledge or his side of the argument well, IMO, despite the vocal support. The way I understand the...

Re: A little help/advice
I always now sterilise by microwave. I might well not do this and have success, not only with germination but continued growth, I don't know, I have sterilised (using the old sterilising steam bucket technique decades ago!) but the question I would ask is - Is there any argument AGAINST heat sterili...

Re: Has anyone tried the peat-free John Innes?
Things have taken a new turn with the confirmation that sales of peat-based composts will be banned from 2024. Thank goodness - at last - after a decade of refusal by the industry to comply with advice which was only just that - advisory and not compulsory. The devil is in the detail, whether the ba...
