Re: Ferocactus buds by Cidermanrolls » Mon Apr 22, 2024 8:17 pm I have just spotted signs of a bud on my Ferocactus electracanthus. I’ve had this plant since I was a schoolboy, I’m over 60 and this will be the first time it’s bloomed, I think. Maybe that is related to me putting it outdoors last su...

This plant belongs to an Italian friend of mine, he's had it for 22 years. I think it must be a ferocactus but which? Any ideas

Re: Smaller agaves (and their hardiness)
I would say toumeyana as that's the biggest of that type and has the longest leaves and those look quite big, too big for bella but the clue according to Greg Starr is to wait until they flower, otherwise it's quite hard to tell!!

Re: Ferocactus buds
Ray, how do you find growing F. glaucescens? I've got a possibility to buy some big ones which I am very tempted to do. Not sure I could risk them outside, even here but for hot sun as well as cold. I've had a couple of feros in the ground here for a few years. One of them is F.stainesii which I've ...

Re: Smaller agaves (and their hardiness)
Yes potatorum got frost damage even here in Portugal one year. I'd go for one of the parryi like Paul says, I like neomexicana. The polianthiflora types are very small and very slow in my experience. Agave Lophantha 'Quadricolor' is a lovely plant and supposedly hardy to well below freezing, I've go...

Re: Chinese National Botanic Garden in Beijing
interesting collection Ralph. They are keen on Euphorbia millii in some of the earlier pics and its understandable as they can flower all year which is why I have quite a few myself now.

Re: Cracker
Needs plenty of water and doesn’t like high temperatures. Best suited for alpine growers, not a good greenhouse plant but looks great in flower. Easy to grow but not with the rest of the plants we write about here. Stuart Yes I used to have one in the UK that flowered beautifully but had to give up...
