Re: Austrocylindropuntia pachypus

Thanks, they will certainly need repotting next summer as they have a dangerous tendency to lean when they get dry

Re: Austrocylindropuntia pachypus

Thanks Suzanne and Tony. I wonder if propations from flowering stems start flowering younger. Mine start into growth around August, although I find I have to give them a bit of water in early summer to keep them upright. I have left the side shoot on and it continues to grow. Perhaps it is just down...

Austrocylindropuntia pachypus

I have 3 plants of this species which are all the same clone and between 7 and 8 years old. The biggest two are now 50cm tall. Two have single stems and one has a single side branch a couple of years old. No flowers yet. Anyone with a flowering plant who can tell me when I might expect flowers?

A bit of free publicity?

Those of you who watch the satirical news show on BBC1 Have I Got News for You? will know that the missing words round at the end of the show features a guest publication for general ridicule, for some obscure magazine with an improbable title such as Margarine Weekly or The Spoon Benders Gazette. T...

The word cull sounds a bit extreme. I think repotted sounds much nicer
Oops sorry Brian it does sound a bit harsh 😬 the spares will end up being given away on the forum no doubt 😀

I grow in a mineral mix and also in light shade, with no problems. Strong light and heat will dry it out.
Or not! Mine are in full sun. Definitely a Quixotic species!

Re: Advice on Astrophytum caput-medusae please

I don't find it difficult at all, apart from its annoying susceptibility to thrips which can easily kill young plants. Grown in my usual compost (2 parts JI#3, 1 part tesco cat litter, 2 parts grit). As Karl says deep pots and plenty of water in summer (watered about twice as often as my usual cacti...
