Like you Ive found the outdoor environment cleans normal plants, eg epiphyllums. I think its because predators can pick off the meally. I guess its the tight nit plants like sempervivums, hardy echeveria, opuntia joints that harbour them, but rarely enough to cause them grief. I suspect some spiders...

I have found that both meallybug and root meally are surviving in alpine pots eg on sempervivums and hardy crassulas, even when we had temperatures well below zero. Mine grew very well for 2 seasons from a small cutting. I bought it inside after the cold snap killed many nearby greenhouse aloes..and the thin leaved epiphyllums and this looked very poorly. Is this unlabelled plant Huernia macrocarpa?
I also have Huernia macrocarpa penzigii and Huernia macrocarpa concinnea, from memory flowers are similar but the plant stems are subtly different.

If your feeling ethical avoid some products, checking where they are quarried etc. Peat is very prescioys and irs food to avoid it to prirect wildlife, reduce global warming and save water supplies. Peat is in many compost products...but you can buy peat free compost and use in your mix. If fibrous ...
