Re: Aloe id please
My obvious guess would be A. Saponaria formerly known as A. Maculata but there many maculate (with spots) aloes, Saponaria makes a large rosette 12"+ in a matter of 2 or 3 years in my experience. The age of your plants could rule out Saponaria. Sorry if that doesn't help.

Agave ID
The attached was aquired as Agave Potatorum but looks more like the patonii form of Parryi..only smaller.

Re: Aloe in Lanzarote
Could well be Cathedral Peak Paul. I inquired as to why it looked different to other Aristata and was told it had been kept better (less neglected). All the others I have are very quick to offset and stay low. This one has out grown it's pot and still going. Interesting you have Mutabilis surviving....

Re: Aloe Polyphylla Question
Thanks for the advice all. It's a bit like the duck billed platypus of the succulent world! The fact that I've got so far (with your help) is an achievement. I've withheld water all week and one of the remaining 3 seedlings still looks like it might throw out a third leaf yet. The other two are near...

Re: Aloe in Lanzarote
I'd describe your perspective as more pioneering Paul. In the book I mentioned, there are more than 20 aloes cited as hardier than -7C which is far more than I imagined. The ones I'll be trying this year in permanent situ are Striatula, Ecklonis, Reitzii and maybe Broomii. Aristata's already planted...

Re: Aloe in Lanzarote
I've been struck for the first time recently by Aloes and their ability to capture interest even in the middle of winter. Add this to their other attributes and they are pretty good all round plants.

Re: Aloe in Lanzarote
I'd recommend "Aloes in Southern Africa" by Gideon F Smith & Braam Van Wyk (xmas present). The open flowers of A. Speciosa are actually white in contrast to the buds so I stand corrected.

Re: Aloe Polyphylla Question
Thank you David, your picture speaks for itself. They were very small seedlings about the same time as mine are now. I think you must be right - water them often but not standing in water. They seemed perfectly happy this way for about a month so there's probably scope for weening them off their 100...
