Re: mam ? id.
I think the ribbed plants are immature Thelocactus (Hamatocactus) setispinus. The other plant could be a young Mammillaria polythele or M. pringlei.

I have absolutely no idea as to what this guy may be, although I've had it for over 12 years now. It's a columnar (although it barely looks that way) and I suspect of some Trichocereus. Any ideas?

Re: Dealing with fungus after germination
Two weeks have gone by, and so have the fungus: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v54/desfolhante/cactos/frailea_horstii_20100413.jpg Apparently, the white fluffy stuff was a harmless fungus that ate what it had to and left the seedlings untouched. Yay! On the other hand, the F. magnifica seedlings ...

Re: cactus disease or red spider
Roger, I had an attack on my greenhouse last year that did that exact same damage to some of my Sulcorebutia , Lophophora , Pelecyphora and a few others. Oddly, the attacked plants were sometimes not even close, and plants from the same species sittings next to the afflicted ones did not show any si...

Re: I hope know I.D my mammillarias
Mammillaria rhodantha for #5, M. spinosissima for #4, #3 seems to be one of the big flowered Ancistracanthae (M. mazatlanensis?) and I have no idea of what the other two may be.

Re: rebutias buds?
It's not just over there. A year ago, all my Sulcorebutia were in bloom at this time. This year only Sulcorebutia caniguerali shows those teeny-tiny red dimples that anounce the flowers. On the other hand, Mammillaria lasiacantha has already flowered and a few Turbinicarpus too (although these tend ...

Re: Dealing with fungus after germination
Thank you, all. I did sterilize the compost (it's completely mineral and I boiled it for a few minutes) and I always suspected the seeds to be the unsuspecting carrier of the spores. Maybe next time I'll soak the seed in a mild bleach solution before sowing, that would delay the fungal attack and gi...

Re: Dealing with fungus after germination
Mike, I happened to bump upon a bottle of it under another trade name - Cryptonol - from a french manufacturer, "Vilmorin", with the very descriptive name "Désinfectant du sol". A friend of mine offered about half a bottle of it and said that he had bought it from Kuentz, but tha...

Dealing with fungus after germination
I'm not very experienced with cactus from seed, my first efforts have yet to turn two years old. I'm still in the process of collecting failures rather than successes. A good friend of mine gave me some Frailea seed and warned me about their intolerance to the wet conditions usually associated with ...
