Just how big do these tubers grow? This is one of several similar tubers I have from a 2018 sowing. Not yet watered but just starting to grow.

It got a bit hot in the propagator, the heat sensor is buried in the compost and set at 30 degrees.

I would suggest that in the great bulk of cases, trying to grow Aztekium, Blossfeldia, Strombocactus, quite a few choice mesembs, and the like, in unsterlised composts, would be more than a challenge. I wouldn't agree entirely. These are 1 year old seedlings of Strombocactus disciformis from my own...

Mammillaria shiedeana ssp. giselae monstrose, a lot of buds and flowers on many heads; they won't all open at the same time. Growing quite happily in pure lava rock rather than the fertile soils rich in dark organic material in the wild.
