Re: SumiSoil
From the blurb, it sounds comparable to cat litter or other clay granules, but made from a different material. You could try it on its own if that's the way you want to grow, or use it as part of a soil mix. It sounds like it absorbs a lot of water, but then so does cat litter and that works well. ...

SumiSoil
Has anyone had experience with SumiSoil? It is 3mm beads and claims to be "charcoal encased in a honeycomb ceramic shell". I intend to use it for mesembs, but I am not aware of any benefits of charcoal to plants (other than as a source of microelements). I bought it without reading the lab...

Re: What's wrong with this Jordaaniella cuprea?
Thanks Aiko. This is the same pot. This plant has been very robust before. When lithops and Conos were struggling, this plant did not care a bit. The plants are under lights, so light level is the same every day, but the last few weeks there have been greater variations in temperature than the previ...

What's wrong with this Jordaaniella cuprea?
This Jordaaniella cuprea has been doing very well for 5 years, and then suddenly in the past week it started going downhill very quickly. I still water it about every two weeks, and keep it at around +25C during day time, and +5C at night under lights. Any ideas what's wrong? 2019-04-06 17.45.10.jpg...

Re: Overwintering plants - Relative Humidity
What is the minimum RH for mesembs that would be OK during winter? My problem is low humidity. My mesembs are kept indoors over winter. It is way too warm for them indoors (especially once you shine some intense light at them), and I cool them by blowing outside air (at about -15C and 60%RH) onto t...

Re: Lumen
What are people doing about ventilation in their tents? I am in the process of building a fixture that would cool the plants with outside air during winter freezing temperatures. It may sound crazy to use air at -20C to cool down desert plants, but it is not. My trial last winter showed that I need...

Re: Pondering photosynthesis
That begs the question: If you grow CAM plants under lights (such as in the winter), what spectrum do we need to aim for? Do we need to turn blue LEDs in the morning for a few hours?iann wrote:Although the exact chemical triggers are unknown, this process is regulated by light, possibly blue light.

Conophytum phoeniceum
I was pleasantly surprised to find my Conophytum phoeniceum in flower this week. This is a rather strange season for cono's flowering. Does this reflect my inappropriate cultivation, or is it common for C. phoeniceum to flower at this time of the year in the Northern hemisphere? They stayed complete...
