I use standard cactus potting compost and orchid compost 50/50. Indeed they don't like heat but here in the UK it's hardly a problem. Even then mine are in the sun in the morning, shade in the afternoon. Polyphylla is a cool climate Aloe. It's almost impossible to grow in Arizona but the biggest are...

Shame. That would be a beauty.

They don't want to be wet or dry. Just moist at all times. Once they are big you can pretty much treat them with impunity. You can't overwater them.

I never sandpaper. Once they are sprouting I make up my usual seed compost, John Innes and vermiculite 50/50. Stand in boiling water then drain.
