Re: Solar Powered Fans
It's hard to be specific, but in general, I'd expect a reduction in system efficiency as you add fans without adding more batteries and panels. In addition, the battery may be suited to lower load applications so may be less effective and/or have a reduced life if driving multiple fans. However, as ...

Re: Question ... is Opuntia humifusa self fertile?
Is Opuntia humifusa self fertile? I have pods swelling under dead flowers. According to ADBLPS, yes. I sowed Opuntia humifusa seeds last year and more seedlings sprouted than I sowed seeds - several of the seed seemed to have double embryos and I think 1 seed may have had treble. I'd not noticed th...

Re: Solar Powered Fans
After reading this thread, I was doing some googling and found this set, https://amzn.eu/d/6ubfwuW Don't know whether these are decent or not but they look quite solid and come with a controller and wires. From reading about it this just needs a battery and then 12v fans to power. I was looking at ...

Mini-minima and maxi-minima
Here's Escobaria minima living up to its name. The flowering seedling is about 11mm across. I don't think I've ever flowered a smaller cactus, although Echinocereus davisii (e.t.a. - and Pediocactus knowltonii -) must have come close. Sown 16/3/2019, so not going to outgrow the greenhouse any day so...

Re: Aloe vera
A. barbadensis is a synonym of A. vera. There is a wealth of nonsense talked on the internet about these plants. Advice to reproduce them from leaf cuttings, magical healing and dietary supplement properties, etc. A pedantic insistence on incorrect naming is the just one of many sins. According to h...

Re: Greenhouse Winter protection
I think bubble wrap is most use for heated greenhouses - it keeps the heat in rather than letting it escape - fast - through the glazing. For an unheated greenhouse, insulation is likely to be of only marginal help. Insulation laid over benches will keep plants a little bit warmer, for a little bit ...
