Re: Venclusianus
"Do I remember someone telling me that this arose in cultivation, not in the wild?" Quite possibly, it was one of the old E. European introductions before the "Iron Curtain" came down, but they did have a lot of old Fric plants we did not have in the West then. However, any yell...

Re: Mammillaria formosa the new Ariocarpus?
Auction Fever it is often known as!!, I once did some work for an auctioneer. He pointed to a carton of washing up liquid bottles and said "you see those there, somebody will get so carried away bidding in order not to be beaten they will bid far more for them than they can get them at the loca...

Re: First casualty
Mine get watered either when I feel like it, or remember, and neither is that often! They really require less water than you think. After all it does not rain every seven to ten days in habitat. In the middle of the year if temperatures are high cacti do not really grow anyway. From what I have read...

Re: Purple haze
Hope you have more luck flowering it quicker than I did then Maria. It is noted for being reluctant to flower. Whether it is just a matter of size or not I do not know.

Re: Purple haze
I agree about Notocactus herteri . Mine came as a pretty large plant from a collection being sold. I must have had it about 12 years and it never flowered until this year. My plant is about 7" high and I only managed to take a picture of the first flower to open as I was working when all the ot...

Re: Prickly one!
The New Cactus Lexicon says:- The generic names Stenocactus and Echinofossulocactus have both been in use for this genus, but the latter name was originally based on plants referable to Echinocactus sensu stricto (Hunt 1980/CSJGB 42(4): 105-107) So evidently it is Stenocactus again until somebody di...

Re: Greenhouse Show Off
Mine's bigger than yours Nick! Mine's about 20ft long and up into the greenhouse roof. It did flower in a previous incarnation in my other greenhouse in the past when only around 3'-6" long, but I missed the flower and only noticed after it had closed. However my flowering plant is planted in t...

Re: First casualty
Your lucky if you have only lost a couple, I must have lost a hundred or more since the 1960's in bad winters not heating the greenhouse. Plants often survive the winter OK but die when you first start to water again, but maybe that's just because they have been slowly rotting over winter. As long a...
