Re: Adansonia digitata

Not wasting a moment! I am wondering whether chopping the tap root off will induce the smaller (feeder?) roots to thicken up and create a more prominent "nebari" (https://www.bonsaiempire.com/basics/styling/surface-roots). These adansonia digitata were sown in February and had the lateral...

Re: Thelocactus heterochromus

Flowers so big they merge. This plant is in its fifth year from seed. Caught it late, the flowers are going over.

ID please

This was included with a Lot from the Jeremy White auction. It has fleshy serrated leaves and is in a 12” hanging basket. Some sort of Sedum perhaps?

Thank you.

You are right Iann. The picture below is of a seedling of Sterculia foetida showing the "arms" (cotyledons) outstretched.

Re: What are these "arms" for?

Those are cotyledons, aren't they? I wasn't sure Iann as they aren't each attached to the main trunk, as more easily seen on the larger plant in the second photo, but I'll see how the other seedlings get on. A reasonable explanation though. I'd vote for "flippers"! And counter with a ques...

What are these "arms" for?

On these 3 week seedlings of Sterculia rynchocarpa, there appear to be 2 arms growing above the swollen base. The paired photos were taken about a week ago and you can see in the larger plant that they are blackening from the ends. On the larger plant the "arms" have now turned completely ...

Re: Cycas revoluta germination

Good illustration of this type of seed starting. If I ever find the cycad seeds I'm looking for, I'll use deep pots instead of trays. Cact.cz has Cycas revoluta on the seed list. MikeDom, where did you get yours? I collected them from a couple of large trees that were covered in ripe seeds whilst o...

Cycas revoluta germination

The first thing the seed does is to put down a root measuring 5 inches. The root has pushed itself out of the propagator which is way too shallow.
