Re: I seems determined to prove that it IS an Echinopsis...

Hi Peter Your plant seem to be a Trichocereus ( Echinopsis ) candicans (tu) Trichocereus, yes, but lamprochlorus. My candicans (var. gladiatus) is the one next to it, upright and with a thicker stem. It grows much more slowly, flowers much less readily, and is self-fertile, which the lanprochlorus ...

This came as a surprise - I wouldn't have guessed they were self-fertile!

Re: Ariocarpus, heat and water

I never ventilate my greenhouse and the inside is painted black to get the temperature up as much as possible. Most of my seedlings are up underneath the roof where they get full sun and a lot of heat, but in Summer I water them daily. They often turn red at first, but they seem to like it, and many...

Re: I.D. confirmation needed

I'd say that was hertrichiana. tegeleriana has semi-tubular flowers that don't open very wide. They stay 'open' at night. The petals are often (though not always) quite narrow with acute points and the flower tube and especially the fruit if you set a fruit is often (though not always) spiny. That ...

Re: Identification required please

Echinopsis oxygona, the spineless form that used to be known as Echinopsis eyriesii, however the spiny E. oxygona, E. multiplex and spineless E. eyriesii all grow together in the same population and are all the same species, only varying in degree of spination and flower colour. In my experience th...

I.D. confirmation needed

This may require a word of explanation. About 55 years ago I bought two Lobivias, one labelled 'allegriana' (now 'hertrichiana'), the other 'tegeleriana'. They looked very similar and neither had flowered by the time I left the family home and went to university. I did not return except for a day or...

Re: Surprising cross!

Ooops! I shouldn't write things in a hurry. Slip of the mind. I did mean spinulosus. The good thing about this site is someone will always tell you what you meant! The thing is, of course, I don't know what was in the original cross. The epicactus is from a batch of mixed seeds bought by my mother m...

Surprising cross!

THIS purple epicactus ASIPurple epicactus fertilised with pollen from Selenicereus strigulosus.jpg was fertilised with pollen from Selenicereus strigulosus (being the only two flowers I had open on that night). Obviously I am going to get seed. If it is viable it will be interesting to see what resu...
