Re: New Echeveria hybrids from Suculentia Nursery Solved
You have some beautiful plants. Its a shame you are not in the UK as I am interested in cold hardy succulents.

Re: Diatomaceous earth
Some say it must be kept dry; others say that it can be added to the compost mix DE has many uses and I think these recommendations are for two different ones. The former if you're wanting it to be insecticidal, the latter if you want it to be a soil improver. Not sure where your concept of TWO typ...

Re: Diatomaceous earth
Well, to follow my original query up: I puffed some diatomaceous earth around my plants. After 2 or 3 weeks there are still a few sciara flies about. There is not one dead sciara fly on any of the powder in between the pots, so if it does kill them, it certainly doesn't do so instantaneously, and e...

We keep our polytunnel at five degrees C but check plants daily for any water drops which have fallen from the roof.

Re: Meths and mealy eggs
My understanding is that Surgical Spirit could have propan-2-ol in it. This is isopropyl alcohol or isopropanol to the old school non-chemically educated. It has a much higher boiling range (not boiling point because it's a mixture of variable composition). Yes it's toxic - but the toxicity figures...

Re: Meths and mealy eggs
Hi Chez, what percentage is the isopropyl that you use ? Thanks I will have to check the bottle but I think its very high, over 90%. Hubby bought it too strong by mistake.I use it more dilute for craft to carry a water based shimmer paint. I spray it in a fine mist and the solvent evaporates leavin...

Re: Meths and mealy eggs
Whenever I have sprayed a plant with meths, I've not seen any mealies come back on the same plant. By the way, have you notced how expensive meths is these days? £4 for 500ml in Wilko. I'm beginning to wonder if white spirit w2ould do the job at half the price. I use isopropyl alcohol. I already ha...

Re: Diatomaceous earth
I haven't used it on plants but I use it in my chicken coop on the perches and nest box for red mite. It does keep red mite numbers down.

Re: Dehumidifier question
We were considering it last year as we have large tropical plants in our tunnels with big leaves. These increase the humidity. We seal up the double doors at one end of the tunnel for winter but open the other end when its not too cold. We use a fan to keep the air moving. It worked without dehumidi...
