Herts Mike wrote: Fri Aug 26, 2022 5:03 pm On Llifle there is Huernia longii ssp echidnopsoides which isn’t dissimilar. Plus it was once known as pillansii v echidnopsoides. Name confusion?
Nope, it's not that.

Re: Surprise in Huernia pillansii v. longii

I've now checked John Pilbeam's Stapeliads book and there's no match there either to your plant John, so I'm now fairly certain that you've got a hybrid, which shouldn't be masquerading as a species IMHO. I suggest composting it since the plant and label really don't match and finding a match is nea...

Re: Surprise in Huernia pillansii v. longii

That isn't pillansii John. More like keniensis. I too query the ID. First off there's no such plant as Huernia pillansii v. longii . There are H. pillansii & H. longii and it's certainly not the latter. Turns out this isn't H. keniensis as Mike suggests. Any chance of a good photo of the plant ...

Re: New IKEA cacti

Hi Colin, I don’t suppose these plants were named when bought by any chance ? Hi Eric, Yep, all my IKEA purchases were labelled with plant passports, so these are the IKEA names: Espostoa guentheri Mammillaria spinosissima Notocactus magnificus Parodia warasii Pilosocereus pachycladus I've updated ...

Re: New IKEA cacti

Colin are you sure those plants on the right aren't Eriocephala (or whatever genus you prefer) warasii, rather than magnificus? They are green, rather than blue... Ralph Well Ralph, now that you mention it, no I'm not so sure. I posted about E. warasii a while back as you know. So I've just taken a...

Re: New IKEA cacti

pdf attachment seems fine to me... Excellent. Thanks Phil. This I think is the first time I've tried to attach a PDF here. BTW, the photo on the first page of the NZ article gives a really great impression of just how extensive the Duthie Park collection is. I need to return and spend a day ...

Re: New IKEA cacti

Yes, the fine detail probably isn't well resolved and their sampling wasn't very heavy in this area as it wasn't the focus of the study. schl_clei.JPG Some real mouthfuls there, and that's coming from an organic chemist! That's nothing Ian, molecular biology can beat Phil's words hands down. So, wa...

Re: New IKEA cacti

I've just remembered that like Tony I've also seen Vatricania guentheri in flower but my encounter was at Duthie Park, Aberdeen, so I'll attach two pics. Unfortunately their splendid specimen was only in bud during the Glasgow Branch visit back in 2019 so I never got to see the open flowers. BTW if ...

That supports what I've been saying in that V. guentheri isn't closely related and certainly doesn't belong to Espostoa ....

Re: New IKEA cacti

I'm not sure what molecular studies tell us about the relationship between true espostoas and Vatricania but I'd be very surprised is they said these form a single unified genus. It came out close to Cleistocactus in Schumpberger & Renner's 2012 Am J Bot article. Thanks Phil, I'll check that ou...
