Re: Aloe polyphylla hybrids

Really interesting topic. Time will tell whether your Aristaloe x polyphylla hybrids are what you hope JoelR. There is quite a bit of variability with Aristaloe clones currently available and it probably has more to offer without hybridisation if someone could initiate a breeding program. Would you...

Re: Aloe polyphylla hybrids

Very interesting, especially as I've just sown some maculata seeds from the BCSS seedlist! Not as pretty as polyphylla in my opinion but if it means it can be grown more easily in a hotter climate it could be popular in large parts of the world that grow their succulents outside! Perhaps they can b...

Re: Aloe polyphylla hybrids

An interesting Aloe maculata/polyphylla hybrid came up on a Facebook group and then comments and pictures followed from an Aloe grower in South Africa who has produced Aristaloe aristata x Aloe polyphylla hybrids. Many people in South Africa struggle to grow Aloe polyphylla because of it's high mont...

Re: Aloe polyphylla hybrids

I have enjoyed reading this and the polyphylla germination thread. My large one bloomed this year so I tried to self pollinate 3-4 flowers. Though I read that they are self-infertile. My plant generated 25 or so mature fruit with lots of seeds. I have an Aloe pratensis right next to it and the humm...

Re: Aloe polyphylla hybrids

Is it age or size before aloe polyphylla flowers or both ? I would say flowering size rather than age which could vary quite a bit. I think the best strategy would be to plant out at around 30cm across and plan for Winter protection depending on location. I moved house last June and my raised beds ...

Re: Aloe polyphylla hybrids

I haven't got Aloe aristata but I notice the first plant has the line of spines down the back ridge of the leaf just like polyphylla. Does aristata usually have that? If not, you may well have a successful polyphylla X aristata hybrid! Aristaloe does to some extent have that spiny ridge (see first ...

Re: Aloe polyphylla hybrids

Well done for getting them flowering together or did you save the pollen. We will all be interested in any spares   . They just happened to be in flower around the same time. Some of the AP pollen came from Melissa Scott and I posted her pollen from my plant also. On Tuesday the zoom ta...
