Re: Cotyledon lewisia

Lovely plants Ross, do you protect them from rain over the winter? I find that rot is the main problem with these. No they're completely unprotected, just left as they are. I've got a white flowered one out the back, facing the beach, that's probably about twenty years old now. All still in plastic...

I've got a few that have just sat in pots in the front garden for the past five years or so. They seem happy and are flowering just now. Very vibrant colours 😎

Re: Astrophytums

Those are lovely clean plants, Ross! Yes there are some red cultivars around, I have a couple of A. asterias with red flowers and an A. Capricorne (or senilis, can’t remember!) with red flowers, all grown from seed, see pics below. Not sure about white flowers, I’ve never seen any. D11B5599-5186-46...

Astrophytums

Ray's "Autumn sunshine" post inspired me to dig out a few more of my plants today. Astrophytum DNA must be so mixed up these days in cultivated plants that I must check out pictures of habitat plants as I'm intrigued by the amount of red in the flower throats. Also, am I imagining it or or...

Re: Autumn Sunshine

A couple of my Astro's are flowering too (myriostigma and capricorne). Astrophytum's, at least for me, flower over the longest period, with repeat flowers appearing over the growing season.

Re: Question about capillary matting

I echo Edd's thoughts although I wonder if the re-wetability might vary between types/brands of matting? I have a friend who used it once and I recall him saying that the best roots he ever saw on his plants were those growing into the matting. But it created a problem when it came to lifting the po...
