Maybe because you have to give nutrients to your plants so much oftener if there is no compost.I´m using a totally compostfree substrate for all my plants because almost any compost you could buy here in Sweden have a large proportion of peat in it,which i dislike for a number of reasons. It depends on what species they are,but most cati and other succulents benefit from a light sprinkling now and then when in room temperature. Just to keep the roots alive so they don´t dry up.

Planted in the ground it could take almost anything , but in a pot ? I´m not sure.

Lowest recorded temp outside: -23,8C inside the GH +0,8C. A bit on the low side,since the thermostat is set at+4C but on the other hand-it rose to +11C at midday in full sun! It seems that the heater is a bit slow to start when it´s really cold outside. But as long as it don´t drop below zero inside...
