Maculatus is one of the most misidentified species. So it seems Those illustrated on the maculatus page of succulentguide.com which Fruit provides a link to are also wrongly named. I have a few Pachycereus pringlei that are reddish/brownish at the base and assumed it was just ageing/corking
Of course that doesn't mean they are supposed to look that way - perhaps mine are poorly too
