Re: Pterocactus tuberosus winter care
All my Pterocacti come through the winter often below freezing in a cold greenhouse. P. tuberosus is not a plant for those who grow them on windowsill's or in their house since it drops some segments in winter making a bit of a mess. Otherwise it is easy to grow and due to dropping segments the easi...

Re: Lophophora starting to rot -what do I do
Evidently the confusion about the spelling of aluminum/aluminium was caused by its discover who first named it aluminum but later changed it to aluminium. The Americans using his original spelling and the British using his later one.

Re: Lophophora starting to rot -what do I do
I did hear on a past radio programme that American spellings were often closer to their original roots than ours are, but its all Greek to me! However language scholars will spend a lot of time debating it and you thought your discussion was getting involved? https://www.textkit.com/greek-latin-foru...

Re: Sulcorebutia hertusii / patriciae
I decided the best way to sort it out was to see if my old email address for Brian Bates still worked since he found the plant which was named after his wife, who is sadly now dead he says. This was his reply:- "Hi Dave. S. patriciae is mainly white spined but there are also a decent percentage...

Re: Sulcorebutia hertusii / patriciae
An old forum but I am still having trouble sorting my plants out. The Journal article says S. patriciae stays single headed, yet Ralphs plant is offsetting?

Re: Poor roots on a large Aylostera
I suppose it depends if you have flat or slatted staging's, or if the pots are on standing on Hortag or similar bench topping regarding overcoming the final tension and the pot completely draining onto the bench? I read a post somewhere where the person put cotton wicks through the pots drainage hol...

Re: Poor roots on a large Aylostera
One problem with large plants is people tend to go from normal depth pots to pans thinking they will dry out quicker. Whereas the reverse is true, they keep water around the roots for longer. This is known as the "Perched Water Table" where given the same compost and watering the water lev...
