I too scorched a few cacti about a month ago. I kept reading a large number of my collection can take full sun so I thought I would give them full sun. Sorry I don't live in Europe so can't help you there. I was just curious why Dave chose perlite. Perhaps it is just "price and availability" as you say.

I am surprised to see this Dave, since almost everywhere it has been suggested that there is much better replacements for perlite. I suppose you must have a special purpose for it.

... I think diatomite in large quantities drains too quickly. When allowed to dry, it acts as a desiccating agent, drying the roots up... Interesting. I never thought of that. Since I use NAPA and it is sold as an oil absorbent that makes a lot of sense. I am using it 50/50 with a nice loam I final...

Yes, I pot them in very drainy soil, basically 90% grit. When I water them, water starts draining out of the hole almost immediately. I started using diatomite earth, and I wonder if it could be a bad idea, since it stays moist for long time. I realize this is a bit old but I do have a couple quest...
