Gymnocalycium Hybrid

This plant was allegedly a Gymnocalycium uebellmannianum, which has white flowers. I cannot recall where I got it from, but the orangy flowers indicate it is a hybrid, as there are no orange flowered Gymnocalyciums. It's not a great plant when out of flower, so I will be removing heads/offsets and g...

First Flowering

I have been growing a Denmoza Rhodacantha for quite a few years now.
It was raised,by Graham Charles, from habitat collected seed.
Well, at long last, it has decided to flower. One of those events that makes your day, despite the rotten weather.

Re: Should a Gymnocalycium flower from the side?

Generally they flower from the areoles near the top, but some species flower from lower down. It is not unusual for them to put out the odd flower like yours is doing.

G.Horstii ssp. Buenekeri in Flower

I noticed this plant doing its stuff this morning so I thought I would share it online.

I find the salmon pink flowers of this subspecies particularly attractive.

Matucana Oreodoxa Roseiflora

My plant started flowering yesterday, but I've only managed to take a photograph just now.

It certainly lives up to its specific name.

Re: Caution: Leaf-cutter Bees

I bow to your greater knowledge Diane, HOWEVER when you have 12 or more in a 3" diameter pot they destroy roots by their tunnelling.
I have lost at least 1 plant from this sort of damage.

Caution: Leaf-cutter Bees

This is the time of year when you find bees in your greenhouse that don't seem interested in the flowers. These are leaf-cutter bees. They excavate a tunnel into the soil in a plant pot, line it with cut pieces of leaf and lay their grub inside. when the grub is ready they eat the roots of the plant...

Flowering Today

Got a nice surprise just now. This caught my eye when I went in my greenhouse.

It is Matucana (Oreodoxa) Rebutiflora. Clear to see where the specific name come from.
