Re: Rarest and most common cactus?
Phil. I thought once a plant became super rare it was "de-listed" because there's no point in protecting nothing. Are you asking about the IUCN classification, CITES, or a specific country's listing process? The IUCN has data deficient, extinct in the wild, and extinct categories. Often t...

Re: Rarest and most common cactus?
The problem with all these supposedly scientific lists is they break the first rule of science (and botany is supposed to be a science) that others should verify the results before they are accepted as facts for listing. Most listings are based solely on the opinion of one person visiting a single ...

Re: Rarest and most common cactus?
I've written this elsewhere in answer to this same question. Appendix 4 of the New Cactus Lexicon comprises conservation assessments for the cactus taxa they recognise. These are drawn from a number of sources and, I think it's fair to say, are a bit rough and ready in places and plenty of species ...

Double Mammillaria identification
Dear all, I have acquired two Mammillaria without definite identifications: http://imgur.com/a/Jrde6 . I'm not sure about either. Bonus picture of M. dixanthocentron (LAU 1059) at the end. That plant was sown in 1983, and the head was chopped off in 2014. I would appreciate any help with identificat...

Re: Mammillaria ID - formosa?
Thanks for your help, Chris. The plant is very flattened most of the time - only with the monsoon rains we had of the last few weeks did it swell up significantly enough to be marginally globose. I will go with M. formosa ssp. pseudocrucigera for now, as you said it does fit the plant well, but will...

Thank you all for your help.
Chris, the fruits were indeed a very bright red, and the seeds are brown. May I ask if this is another differentiation between M. formosa and M. sempervivi?

Mammillaria ID - formosa?
Hi all, I am trying to identify a Mammillaria of which I got some fruit. It looks like M. formosa to me, and if I were to go further M. formosa ssp. pseudocrucigera. The flowers, which I have not seen, are supposedly a pale pink. Does anyone have some input on this ID? http://i.imgur.com/K3iERx2.jpg...

Gorgeous plants! I love Peniocereus too! Here's my seedlings (approx. a month old; P. diguetii and P. greggii var. transmontanus): http://imgur.com/a/1bPy2

Re: Lithops ID
It is indeed a bit darker in reality, but it does get nearly direct Arizona sun.iann wrote:Is it not so yellow in real life? The plants do change colour in the sun also. Green Lithops tend to brown out if they get a lot of sun. Not this year! Then sometimes they will green up again later in the year.
