Re: A quartet of Mammillaria herrerae
Not wanting to steal your thunder Diane, I was going to post this anyway with some kind of caption along the lines of 'a reminder of why I actually grow these things'

Re: What happened here
Isn't the answer here in the photo? It looks to me as if the rot entered the plant body via that dead flower? We will never know for sure but it is possible, I removed the other dead flowers but for some reason left that one on there! I will be more thorough in future, with all dead flowers (in fac...

Re: What happened here
Watered for the first time this year just a couple of weeks ago and no water since. The roots were healthy, no rot at all, not even at the base of the plant. At a guess the plant was 10-15 years old.

Re: What happened here
Could rot have set in under the spent flower? I was thinking that but it's hard to tell, though it does seem to have spread from the opposite side. Interesting, and sad, to hear that others have had similar experiences with this plant. Very odd as I've not come across anything like this before on a...

What happened here
I went to check over my plants, as you do, and was very disappointed to see this A asterias had suddenly succumbed to some kind of rot. The roots were fine, but as you can see some kind of rot had set in which destroyed the heart of the plant. It was the only one I had, about 3 inches across, a love...

Re: Pure mineral soil mix?
Bacteria do not reproduce via spores. Boiling (although perhaps not some rather diluted exposure to boiling water) will generally kill most bacteria. [/quote] No they don't reproduce by spores (I didn't say they did  ) but they can form spores (endospores) in response to adverse environmental...

Re: Pure mineral soil mix?
Boiling water will kill live bacteria but not their spores. Same with fungi. 'Sterilising' soil is somewhat futile because as soon as it's out of the 'steriliser', it's not in a sterile environment and any airborne spores (there are many) will just infect it again. Good quality, healthy soil or othe...
