Re: Is anyone using an electric dehumidifier in their greenhouse at this time of year?
I grew all my cacti in a cold frame for many years before I got a greenhouse. I had the frame on a concrete base and the frame was completely watertight so no rain could get in. It worked very well but I found I had to time the last watering of the season to August bank holiday to ensure there was e...

Re: Is anyone using an electric dehumidifier in their greenhouse at this time of year?
I’ve got a 3kw Simply Control fan heater with the fan on continuously all year round and a cylindrical fan hanging in the roof, plus in the winter I’ve an old Parwin heater as an extra fan at ground level which just works as a fan. In a 10x8 greenhouse

Re: Is anyone using an electric dehumidifier in their greenhouse at this time of year?
The humidity in my greenhouse currently is 94% compared with 96% outside presumably due to the higher temperature inside the greenhouse, so opening the vents would seem to be counterproductive. In any case leaving the vents shut will help raise the daytime temperature which will allow the humidity t...

Re: Poor roots on a large Aylostera
To be honest I split my rebutias sulcorebutias etc once they get too large, I find they flower better that way, there seems to be a diminishing return in number of flowers once they get beyond a 7 inch pot. Plus it makes more room in the greenhouse

Re: Parwin heater thermostat
This is the new thermostat. The old one presumably bypassed the heating element so that the fan can run with or without the heat being on. I’m assuming this one will turn both heat and fan off if the desired temperature is reached

Parwin heater thermostat
So a few years ago the thermostat failed on my Parwin 3kw heater. Parwin sent me a replacement but not the same as the original black one (apparently no longer manufactured). As I had a spare 2kw heater at that point I just replaced the 3kw thermostat with the old design thermostat from the 2kw heat...

Re: Cactus mites
That’s definitely Brevipalpus you can clearly see the red oval eggs in your photo. I’ve used sprays based on rapeseed oil on orchids and it doesn’t leave a sticky residue. By the way if you can see that many mites that’s not the start of an infestation, they will have been there for quite a while as...

Re: Aporocactus flagelliformis cultivation
Thanks Mike. How hardy is it, do you know? I don't have any Disocactus as they don't tend to be very hardy, if I recall correctly..... Just to add to Mike’s reply, Disocactus speciosus is quite tolerant of low temperatures, as is Disocactus phyllanthoides although the latter will get brown spots if...
