I get black segments mostly on T. geometricus. I've left them too before and they eventually dried out and changed to a crusty white. If you keep 'the edges' of your laui potted lower, so the very outer offsets are level with the gravel top dressing, they will offset more around the edges just below the gravel line, and keep a much flatter overall look.
