Antimima dualis query

Post by rodsmith »

I've successfully grown 6 A. dualis plants from BCSS seed I sowed in March this year. I believe they might be winter growers but can't find confirmation of this in any of my books or on the internet. Can anyone confirm this please?

Hi Rod, this species grows on the Knersvlakte in the west of South Africa and is certainly a winter-grower. My rule of thumb is to leave the species that completely sheath over (e.g. conos or monilarias) dry during the summer, but to give a little bit of water to those that stay leafy so that they do not wrinkle excessively. Most winter-growers will be "thinking" of getting going now.

Hi Rod,

As A.dualis is not a sheathing species I grow this in the summer, or rather I water it in the summer and hope and although I have had quite a number of antimimas flowering throughout this summer, it was not one of them.

Thanks all. The Vivant passerelle link is very useful and I'm sure I will make frequent use of it. I have watered most of my conos now but pageae doesn't appear to be ready yet. Although I keep them in the shade in the summer, the intense heat this year has led to the leaves drying out earlier than usual and I watered most of the conos in late July.

I know the reply is a few years late. I obtained Antimima dualis seeds from Silverhill seeds in South Africa in 2020. I tried sowing them in the spring and summer without success. I sowed 10 from the same seed packet at the end of September and 8 came through and are doing well. I also took cuttings from an adult plant which has now started growing again and the cuttings are doing well. Definitely a winter grower.
