Shade cloth

Post by DaveW »

Anybody know where you can get cheap plastic greenhouse shade netting or cloth in the UK? Browsing the Internet it seems to be far cheaper in the USA as usual than expensive old UK to shade a greenhouse with a similar product.

Dave,

Here in the USA we have a product that is available at the big box stores and is a weed barrier for use under mulch in flower beds. I purchased a few rolls of that and have been using it for the last two years as shade cloth. It isn't as robust as regular shade cloth, but has held up pretty well in my situation.

Don't know if you have something similar or not over there, but figured I'd throw it out there.

Window screen can work too. For smaller applicatons, it can usually be found in replacement screen kits. A little black thread and a needle can make it large enough to cover a small to medium size GH.

Sounds like what is called garden fleece here Michael. I had not thought of using that, I will have to investigate.

At 40p a meter instead of £3.50p a meter for shade cloth that is more my price Michael. Evidently they even do it in green for greenhouse shading at 80p per meter too!

Which do you think, pink or blue for Eriosyce Sue?

I find old net curtains do the trick for me. They allow lots of light through but dapple the shade, taking away the full strength of the sun. Although I have been really naughty this summer and I haven't done anything to shade my greenhouse other than the thick, horrible brambles that are covering the ghouse from the back! The shade in the deepest corner of my ghouse suits lots of my succies though! LOL

Pull yourself together guys !

Net curtains in a greenhouse - even in a cheap plastic greenhouse that is so wrong.....

I purchased a 4X3 m shade cloth from B&Q a couple of months ago for 6 quid - I am sure they will still sell it.

This served me well when my neighbour cut some trees down that shaded my cacti in the late afternoon and I had some 10+ year old cacti and my finest obesa scorched horribly. I still feel sad when I see them !
