Pachypodium bispinosum also looks very similar - until they flower, when they have quite different shaped flowers, and it is easy to tell them apart.

Indeed, equally difficult to tell apart in habitat, unless in flower, bispinosum having a very distinctive bell shaped flower unlike succulentum.
