Hi, RWW, yes you have done really well in getting the seedling back into good health. One question that may sound silly. Some times these "pretty pots" come with no drainage holes that make cultivation very difficult . Just a thought Cheers

After 4 years I think I can claim the plant is now back to full health! Thank you for your kind advice! I removed it from its winter cover yesterday and he has survived the winter well. It’s original problems were caused by my wife taking it to her work and having it in a desk in the middle of an office. She asked me yesterday if she could have it back for her work.......I think I’ll need to get her to sign a “contract of care” first

This has been a brilliant recovery with much patience from you. I honestly didn't think the plant had much of a chance when you posted the original photo but now looks very fit and healthy. It appears to be a stenocactus, possibly S. crispatus, which is very variable like many of the stenocactus species.
