PLEASE NOTE: Viewing and sales of non-auction plants will now commence at 10.00 to allow more time.
There will be an auction and sale of plants from Bill Maddams collection on Sunday 24th May at 26 Glenfield Road, Banstead, Surrey SM7 2DG. Viewing from 10.30am, auction commences at 11.30am. Approximately 150-200 lots will be auctioned, the remaining plants will be available for sale at modest prices. The collection consists primarily of Mammillarias, Thelocactus and Coryphanthas but there are also some Copiapoas, Weingartias, Matucanas etc. There are a few caudiform succulents, Melocactus and Arrojadoas with quite a few Echinocereus and Cerei. Some pictures will be posted between now and the sale.
Parking in Glenfield road is difficult so attendees are recommended to park in the public car park near the Church opposite the top of Glenfield Road. It is only a couple of hundred yards walk. Space in the garden for the auction is limited. Hot and cold drinks will be available.
Books and journals from his extensive library will be available for sale but at a later date.

Re: MAY 24th Bill Maddam's Auction - Updated
A team visited on Tueseday 12th and arranged many plants into saleable lots. For a list of these lots (just over 200) please email treasurer@bcss.org.uk with a subject "Auction plant list" and I will reply in the next few days with the list as an attachment.
The numbered lots represent less than half the plants available, the others can be purchased prior to the auction on the day by making sensible offers to the organisers.
If you are going to attend it would be helpful if you could email me (treasurer@bcss.org.uk) in advance to let me know.
A few of the auction plants are shown below:

Re: MAY 24th Bill Maddam's Auction - Updated & Time change
The auction was a success and folks went away with cars jam-packed full of lovely plants. In the mad rush at the end of the auction to grab some free left-over plants, the people running the auction on behalf of the BCSS did not receive a vote of thanks and I would like to rectify that here.
I would like to thank David Kirkbright who expertly ran the auction, together with helpers/runners Bill Darbon, Mike Stansbie, Chris Davies and another chap whose name I cannot recall. Without them it would not have happened. Thanks must also go to all the people who helped organise the plants into saleable lots beforehand. You know who you are.
Cheers
Al

It was I Al.
I would also like to thank Lynn, Bills wife, who gratefully allowed us to hold the auction at Glenfield Road. It must have been a sad and moving day for her and a happy one as well, knowing that Bill's plants were all going to good homes.

... and Mrs. Werewolf did a fair bit of running and carrying too!
I thought it was an extremely well run event and, as Derek observes, despite the sad circumstances, it was good to see so many plants being re-homed.

I would like to add my thanks to those of you who hoovered up the plants and took them off to greener pastures. A bit of a sad end to what once was a magnificent collection. Thank you all for attending and buying.
I'm still not sure how Al got all his purchases into his car, I just hope he was able to sneak them unnoticed into his greenhouse.
