Re: Outdoors in summer
Hi. I bring all my cacti and the other succulents out from the greenhouse on to the outside, southfacing benches with a plastic rainshelter roof.they are all in square plastic pots or containers and very few have been scorched during the years. If it is very sunny when they go outside i shield them with a shadow netting for a week or two. They will also stand rather low night temps as long as it get reasonably warm in the daytime. I have never had a theft although quite a lot of people know that i have a goodsized collection and both the greenhouse and the plants are in full view from the village road. I believe that the plants thrive on the outside and even if it is a lot of work bringing them out and then in again(since there are about 2800 plants) i think it is well worth the trouble.

Re: Outdoors in summer
Interesting thread and it made me think about our 2 Belfast sinks with their sad collection of neglected herbs. This sounds like a much better use for them. I should get busy.Paul in Essex wrote:I grow mine outdoors permanently. Summers are never the problem for me - it is the winter!
Paul, thanks for sharing your fantastic outdoor displays. If ever you relocate a bit further North I would gladly take up your offer of having a look at your plants.
Cheers

Re: Outdoors in summer
I have had most of my Agaves and Aloes outside since late April and they have now been joined by a few Cacti. The biggest threats I find come from molluscs and the odd shower of hail. I have two badly marked Crassula ovata which were peppered by hail in May and will take some time to recover.

Thanks, Mike. So that's a few mini-blue slug pellets scattered around the outdoor plants as a precaution against the "molluscs". (We call them "slugs and snails" down here in dumbed-down Sussex. )

Re: Outdoors in summer
I won't tell what we call the little b*ggers here is Wales - the extra rain we get here really encourages them. Lately I have had a problem with jackdaws either uprooting plants to get at grubs underneath (but there aren't any) or nibbling the leaves of my Pachyphytums... Really annoying.

Ralph: This is what we use for jackdaws here in Sussex. They're not getting our precious Pachypodiums.

Re: Outdoors in summer
Don't those fireworks make a mess of the plants too?

Hi TS Hakansson! Any chance of a few photos? I love the fact that you move them outdoors. And it's good exercise, too.TS Hakansson wrote:Hi.
