Re: nightflowering Conophytum
You're right to be proud. It's a lovely picture. With such a long exposure you must have used a tripod - and can we assume no flash?

F18 23 seconds, a tripod, on the table in my house with artificial light from the standard light bulbs. If I want to do this on a regular basis I need a 5000 Kelvin lamp.
Thanks for the compliment.

Another advantage of digital cameras, use a grey or white card and set the white balance for the light in use, but agreed more light would be useful.kvb wrote:F18 23 seconds, a tripod, on the table in my house with artificial light from the standard light bulbs. Have a sniff while the camera is doing its work
I don't like the results of using flash for these closeups. Simple camera mounted flash produces unattractive results with parts of the subject underlit and parts blown out. Separately-mounted lighting is needed. Or a very long exposure!

I cheated and snuck in a picture before these closed up for the day. They smell, but not especially pleasant.

A separately mounted flash is ideal!iann wrote:I don't like the results of using flash for these closeups. Simple camera mounted flash produces unattractive results with parts of the subject underlit and parts blown out. Separately-mounted lighting is needed. Or a very long exposure!
Especially interested in Mesembs. small Aloes and South African miniatures and bulbs.

I agree with Ian that flash does not please my eyes even with multiple flash. What I am going to try next is forcing them open by putting them in a dark room earlier and make the picture later in natural light.

Not convinced that's Conophytum obcordellum "declinatum" Soutpan. It looks more like a stenandrum form to me. Where was your source?
